If you know me or you’ve been reading for awhile, you know I’m not one who easily loses motivation in their workouts. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen (I am human!) but because I enjoy working out, the desire to sit on my butt or skip the gym isn’t as common as maybe someone who hasn’t found their love for staying active. But the last week or so has been one of lingering motivation; of doing everything in my power to get me out the door and to the gym; and then to give myself the best workout possible.
My struggle lately has been a reminder that this is something we all face from time to time and it requires a level of embracing but also figuring out how to push through and keep moving forward. Before I get to my workouts this past week, I thought I’d share my top tips for dealing with a lack of workout motivation.
1. New Workout Clothes – I’m not even kidding, because seriously, who doesn’t love new clothes? Even if you don’t like the act of shopping itself, new clothes always makes someone feel good. We want to wear it and show it off – so treat yourself and then get to the gym and show off. The treadmill is your runway! 😉
2. Follow A Training Plan – I know when I’m following a training plan (like for my half marathons or LiveFit), it gives my workouts a better sense of purpose and keeps me pushing towards a goal, even if the only goal is to finish the program.
3. Switch Up Your Workouts – Along the same lines, if you’ve been doing the same thing over and over again, you’re going to get bored and so are your muscles. Switch it up. Maybe it’s time to try spinning or bootcamp classes at your gym, maybe you change up your usual strength training routine or running route around the neighborhood, or maybe you check out a different yoga studio in your area. Whatever it is, change it up – your body and mind will thank you!
4. Motivational Quotes – Some people find motivation through quotes and some don’t. I’m one of those people who love to use quotes whether it’s to motivate me at work, in my workouts or my everyday life.
5. Take a Break – Sometimes our lack of motivation is our body’s way of saying “hey, I’m tired! I need an extra rest day this week!” If that’s the case (and be open to the fact that it might be) – TAKE.IT!
Confession #1: I splurged a bit this past weekend. I knew Old Navy was having some major clearance sale but their active gear was also on sale. Knowing new workout clothes is a great motivation booster, I decided to see what I could find. I ended up walking away with 2 new workout tops + 2 new active crops (+ 1 shirt I can wear out) ALL for $35! Score!
Confession #2: Kate Hudson has a new line of workout clothes called Fabletics and it is SUPER cute! After hearing they’ve got a promo where you can get your first outfit for $25 with free shipping, I decided to splurge and buy another new workout outfit. In my defense, I actually got 3 pieces, not just two, and this is something I can wear lounging around the house, not just while working out. Now I think it’s important to point out that despite my lack of motivation, I DID get in some incredible workouts this week and stayed fairly active. I allowed myself the rest it needed but then got back to it despite continued wavering motivation. It’s all about balance.
