On Saturday as I was walking to the fitness center for a short workout before yoga, there was a slight drizzle but as I continued to walk it started raining harder and harder. And as it did so, the smile on my face got larger and larger and I found myself laughing and smiling and laughing and smiling. I wasn’t sure if I was laughing at the rain, laughing at myself, laughing at the fact that I had the cheesiest grin on my face; honestly it didn’t really matter what I was laughing at or smiling for, the fact was that I was happy.
It was one of those reminders that we need to step back and appreciate the little things in life that bring us joy; whether that be running around in the rain, having lunch with family in town for the weekend, spending your afternoon on the couch writing and watching Netflix, taking a 20 minute nap on a Saturday afternoon just because you want it, or listening to music that makes you think of summer, like ‘Better Nature’ by Silversun Pickups.
This album was released last year and has been one of those on my list to listen to and I’m embarrassed to say that I finally did that. While it took a bit longer than it should have for me to listen, I really enjoyed it. I played the album while walking on the treadmill and while hanging out after yoga, drinking my smoothie and getting some things done before meeting my aunt, cousin, and their friend for lunch while they’re in town.
It was just that reminder to me to enjoy the little things, to sit back, relax, and enjoy each moment, like rainy walks or listening to music without feeling the need to rush to the next song or that I can only partly pay attention because I’m also trying to write or I’m at work. This was the moment, as silly as that may seem.
So today, I challenge you to sit back, relax and just listen. Don’t rush off to the next blog post, meeting or whatever else is on your agenda. Or maybe you come back when you have a few minutes to just listen and breathe and enjoy the moment. Or maybe pop your earbuds in and go dance in the rain (or sun) for a few minutes.
How was your weekend?
