Fitness Friday – Rest for the Sick

Unfortunately, despite being on the upswing of this cold, I woke up yesterday morning sounding awful. This week has been about rest – resting my mind, resting my body, and as I try my best to do, listening to what my body needs and is asking for. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but after 26 years, I also know that when I get sick, it’s my body’s way of saying “you take a break…RIGHT.NOW!

So that’s what I’ve been trying to do…

But like everybody else, I still have things that need to get done, work that I need to do and a job that doesn’t stop just because I’m sick. Monday was definitely the peak of this cold and packed with phone calls, emails and things that needed to get done. I’m happy to have been on the upswing since then, but I’m sure my non-stop nature isn’t helping keep the cold from dragging out.

My workouts this week, or lack thereof, definitely show how I’ve been feeling. I’m someone who will continue to workout through an illness, if and when I can because I like to sweat out those toxins, but I’m also not going to workout and make it worse, it’s a fine line.

Tuesday 12/17

Wednesday 12/18

Monday night I forced myself to do a little yoga, trying to twist and wring those toxins out of my body. By Tuesday I was able to get into the gym for an easy strength session and some slow walking and on Wednesday I got in another strength session and more yoga before bed. And despite hoping for a workout Thursday morning, I knew better and took the day off.

Like I said, this week was about rest and listening to my body.

What did you workouts look like this week?

How are you planning to stay active through the holidays next week?

Fitness Friday & 5 Gifts for the Fitness Fanatic

I have a treat for you all today! Not only is it Fitness Friday, but we’re continuing my 5 Day Gift Guide with 5 Gifts for the Fitness Fanatic. Be sure if you missed it yesterday, to check out 5 Gifts to Give Back. It’s so easy to get caught up in holidays so it’s important to make sure we think of those less fortunate than ourselves and help out however we can.

1 – A new gym bag like this Gaiam Gym Bag – I LOVE my Everything Fits bag my sister got me last year!

2 – I’m OBSESSED with Kettlebells lately. Wrap them up with my Kettlebell row workout or Kettlebell Superset workout, put it under the tree and you’re bound to have a happy fitness fanatic on your hands.

3 – New workout clothes. They’re cute and help keep you motivated in your workouts. The clothes shown are from Ellie.

4 – New Yoga Gear – a clean new mat, block, strap, towel…you get the drill.

5 – A Road ID – safety first! I bought one for my sister when she started running more. My family laughed and thought it was funny (smart, but funny)…irony is that I don’t even own one. This IS on my list this year.

(Disclaimer: a few of these links will take you to my Amazon store.)

6 Tips to Get Out the Door for an Early Morning Workout

Screen Shot 2013-11-25 at 2.51.03 PMI’ve always been an early morning workout girl, at least as long as I’ve been working out consistently. I think it’s because if I get in the habit of doing it first thing in the morning, then I don’t run into the excuses that happen as the day continues on. You know the ones I’m talking about – I’m too tired, I have too much to do, I’ll do it after this, no after that, etc. Getting it done early sets you up for a great day ahead. Plus if something does come up first thing in the morning and you can’t get in your workout, you do still have the rest of the day to try and make it happen (but like I said, I try to avoid that and just get it done).

Obviously some days working out in the morning just isn’t an option. I’ve been there, I get it. You work at 5 or 6am and the gym isn’t open yet or isn’t open early enough for you to workout, shower and get to work on time. That’s when I started pushing back my workouts to when I got off or during my lunch breaks (depending where I was working at the time) but I took the same approach to my workouts during that hour. So here’s a few of my tips to get in that early morning workout:

What are your tips to get out the door for an early morning workout?

Am I missing anything on my list?

Go Go Fitness Friday!

Go.Go.Go.Go.Go.Go.Go! That’s how my life is feeling lately. I’m not complaining, no said it’s a bad thing but it does mean I’m tired and ready for Sunday where the only thing on my agenda is hot yoga. Well…that and some local music radio shows in the evening. Like I said, go.go.go.go! ;)

Regardless, I’ve stayed active this week which is good. That’s always how I’m able to keep my sanity during busy weeks. I know my hard work will eventually pay off but if that happened sooner rather than later, I wouldn’t complain. ha! A last minute show last night, another tonight and I’m eyeing one tomorrow night so let’s just get to the Fitness Friday fun so I can get back to work, mmkay?

Fitness Friday

I’m suddenly gearing up for a busy weekend. It’s funny how quickly that can happen, but regardless of it being busy, the good news is that it should also be really fun! I’m still figuring out what it’ll look like and since it’s all in the name of my job, I’ll share what I can, when I can. For now, I’m thinking I better start the coffee IV to get me through a very busy Saturday! ;)

coffee problem

But let’s not jump ahead of ourselves. It’s been a fun week of fitness, though I do find myself struggling with no “training plan” to follow so I’m still trying to find my groove and figure out what my body wants to do. No worries, I’ll get there.

Any fun plans for your weekend?

Fitness Friday & Ellie Ab Challenge

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Halloween, though I’m sure for many of you, you celebrated last weekend or are planning to celebrate this upcoming weekend. It’s always so weird when Halloween is in the middle of the week, you never know what to expect.

My Halloween was rather laid back and rainy. I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of trick-or-treaters especially with the rain, but I had my own little treat last night so no complaints here.

Anyway, let’s get on to the Fitness Friday fun!

This week I started the Ellie Ab Challenge – really for no reason other than I ran across it and thought it’d be fun and give my abs a nice challenge.  So far, it’s held up to both.

I’m happy with my workouts this week but I’ve been reminded that it’s time to kick up my strength training again now that I’m not running as much or as long distances. But what I’m really excited about is the Hot Chocolate 5k I’m running with Amanda and Becky on Sunday! Because what part of running + chocolate + brunch with your friends doesn’t sound like fun?

Now, let’s get to the Fitness Friday party and link up your posts this week:

How was your Halloween?

Any races or fun fitness events you’re looking forward to this weekend?

Fitness Friday

Guys…this is it.  In two days I’ll be waking up at the butt-crack of dawn, putting on my running gear, downing 1/2 an english muffin with banana + peanut butter, drinking a cup of coffee, strapping my feet into my Mizunos and when the start gun goes off, making my way 13.1 miles through downtown Des Moines, Iowa. …crap.

It’s not that I’m not ready, because I am but I’m definitely dealing with some mind games right now…that’s what tapering does to you, even if you’re only dealing with a week of it.  But seriously, yesterday’s two miler felt like a warm-up…and in reality, I guess it was.

Because of that whole tapering thing, you’ll notice after Sunday’s long run, my workouts got easier and easier so my body and legs have time to rest, relax and get ready for what’s to come.  Because of this, I’ve also been trying to be really mindful of what I’m eating this week and be sure I’m only fueling my body with healthy, nutritious meals and snacks and doing my best to lay off the splurges.  Easier said than done, even for someone who eats clean 90% of the time.  (The week I’m trying to stay clean would be the week I really want to enjoy a glass of wine or crack open a chocolate bar…)

But enough yapping, let’s take a look at my workouts this week:

Friday 10/11/13

Regardless, it was still a week to be proud of.  I’m still trying to figure out what my workouts will look like next week but I’m probably just going to play that by ear and do what feels right for my body.

For now, don’t forget to grab a button and link-up your #FitnessFriday posts below:

If you don’t hear from me – have a great weekend!

What do you have planned for the weekend?

Fitness Friday

Another week has come and gone and it’s just been crazy!  I feel like life is a whirlwind right now, but honestly in the greatest way I could ever imagine.  There will probably be an announcement next week, but you’ll just have to wait and see. ;)  For now, it’s Friday which means it’s Fitness Friday and I’m ready to party!

I’m having a hard time realizing that Sunday will be my final long training run before my half marathon.  A part of me feels like this has been the longest training ever and part of me isn’t ready for it to be over.  I keep finding myself fighting over what I want my races to be for November and December.  Do I want to keep to shorter distances or do I want to run a little further.  I keep going back and forth depending on how my body feels that day.  Running can be a funny little mind game sometimes.

Anyway, let’s see what my workouts looked like this week:

Friday 10/4

35 min walk

15 mins stretch & foam roll

Saturday 10/5

Sunday 10/6

Fitness Friday

I’m so happy it’s Friday, that I have clean carpets in my new townhouse, and that after I get off work today, I have plans with my coworker and new roommate to just hang out, relax and start unpacking.  It may not sound like that much fun to anyone else, but I’m definitely looking forward to the girl time.

Anyway, let’s move onto this past week’s workouts.  Despite moving and lots of exciting (yet still somewhat stressful) stuff, I’ve been able to stay active and allow myself that time.  You’ll notice I was definitely slacking on the yoga but hopefully I can pick that back up this week.
