5 Tips to Find Your Workout Motivation

17 Comments on 5 Tips to Find Your Workout Motivation

If you know me or you’ve been reading for awhile, you know I’m not one who easily loses motivation in their workouts. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen (I am human!) but because I enjoy working out, the desire to sit on my butt or skip the gym isn’t as common as maybe someone who hasn’t found their love for staying active. But the last week or so has been one of lingering motivation; of doing everything in my power to get me out the door and to the gym; and then to give myself the best workout possible.

My struggle lately has been a reminder that this is something we all face from time to time and it requires a level of embracing but also figuring out how to push through and keep moving forward. Before I get to my workouts this past week, I thought I’d share my top tips for dealing with a lack of workout motivation.

1. New Workout Clothes – I’m not even kidding, because seriously, who doesn’t love new clothes? Even if you don’t like the act of shopping itself, new clothes always makes someone feel good. We want to wear it and show it off – so treat yourself and then get to the gym and show off. The treadmill is your runway! 😉

2. Follow A Training Plan – I know when I’m following a training plan (like for my half marathons or LiveFit), it gives my workouts a better sense of purpose and keeps me pushing towards a goal, even if the only goal is to finish the program.

3. Switch Up Your Workouts – Along the same lines, if you’ve been doing the same thing over and over again, you’re going to get bored and so are your muscles. Switch it up. Maybe it’s time to try spinning or bootcamp classes at your gym, maybe you change up your usual strength training routine or running route around the neighborhood, or maybe you check out a different yoga studio in your area. Whatever it is, change it up – your body and mind will thank you!

4. Motivational Quotes – Some people find motivation through quotes and some don’t. I’m one of those people who love to use quotes whether it’s to motivate me at work, in my workouts or my everyday life.

5. Take a Break – Sometimes our lack of motivation is our body’s way of saying “hey, I’m tired! I need an extra rest day this week!” If that’s the case (and be open to the fact that it might be) – TAKE.IT!

Confession #1: I splurged a bit this past weekend. I knew Old Navy was having some major clearance sale but their active gear was also on sale. Knowing new workout clothes is a great motivation booster, I decided to see what I could find. I ended up walking away with 2 new workout tops + 2 new active crops (+ 1 shirt I can wear out) ALL for $35! Score!

Confession #2: Kate Hudson has a new line of workout clothes called Fabletics and it is SUPER cute! After hearing they’ve got a promo where you can get your first outfit for $25 with free shipping, I decided to splurge and buy another new workout outfit. In my defense, I actually got 3 pieces, not just two, and this is something I can wear lounging around the house, not just while working out. (Disclaimer: if you purchase Fabletics through my link, I earn points towards future outfits.)

Now I think it’s important to point out that despite my lack of motivation, I DID get in some incredible workouts this week and stayed fairly active. I allowed myself the rest it needed but then got back to it despite continued wavering motivation. It’s all about balance.

Great tips, Katie! Love old navy workout gear. My fav!! There are more days than not when I’d rather just not work out. But I’ve always been that way. Once it’s a habit, no big deal. But pair it with back pain almost constantly, working out has fallen to the wayside that past couple months. I’m still going but movements are definitely limited. lol

I like their regular clothes (well, some of it!) but LOVE that their activewear is at such a great price point for what has proven to be great quality too!

Yeah I have motivation problems unless I’m signed up for a race. I think I read you signed up for another half?? We should try to run one together this year!! (Fingers crossed some relative doesn’t get married in a different city that weekend ha!)

Great thoughts! I totally agree with new workout clothes. And that actually makes me want to go out and buy new clothes… as if I need more! lol

My week of workouts was alright. I feel slightly lacking in motivation, but mostly, I’m lacking in sleep and time to get enough workouts in. I either have to workout really early in the morning, on my lunch break or really late at night. Lunch is fine, but it has to be quick so I just run. I really crave harder and better strength workouts but it’s not happening right now. Maybe next week!

Definitely make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Sometimes workouts need to move to the back burner to ensure we’re getting enough rest. I love lunch time workouts! Running leaves me super sweaty so if I’m short on time and can only hop in the shower for 2 seconds, I’ll lift weights during those workouts or do my cross-training. Something that gives me a good workout but where I don’t find the need to “start” over for the day. LOL

I’m like you- I can usually get my workouts in with no problem. But- there are definitely days that I just don’t feel like doing anything! I LOVE your tips and totally agree with all of them! If I have a new top that I love, I look forward to wearing it! 🙂
And, I think following a plan is SO helpful- that way you just show up and get it done.
I haven’t done a deck of cards workout in FOREVER! My rest day is tomorrow but I’m going to bring it back on Sunday. SUCH a great way to switch it up! 🙂

I’ve loved those Deck of Cards workouts since FitMixer bootcamp! I can’t believe you went through the deck three times – even with different exercises. Once through and I was shot! 😉

I also looked at the old navy discount, I only got 1 pair of capri leggings. my tank top drawer is full, but the screen printed tank you got was in my basket for a while when I was debating which purchases to finalize!

Also, just tried to log out of the fabletics, did you realize that was a monthly service? I was all pumped about the pricing until I realized it was a recurring thing.

Yes, BUT you have until the 10th to say if you want the pieces or not. If you don’t want any, your card isn’t charged. If you don’t respond, they charge your card but it’s used as a credit for future purchases. I liked this better than some of the other monthly things so I went with it. At least for now. 😉
