I’ve always been an early morning workout girl, at least as long as I’ve been working out consistently. I think it’s because if I get in the habit of doing it first thing in the morning, then I don’t run into the excuses that happen as the day continues on. You know the ones I’m talking about – I’m too tired, I have too much to do, I’ll do it after this, no after that, etc. Getting it done early sets you up for a great day ahead. Plus if something does come up first thing in the morning and you can’t get in your workout, you do still have the rest of the day to try and make it happen (but like I said, I try to avoid that and just get it done).
Obviously some days working out in the morning just isn’t an option. I’ve been there, I get it. You work at 5 or 6am and the gym isn’t open yet or isn’t open early enough for you to workout, shower and get to work on time. That’s when I started pushing back my workouts to when I got off or during my lunch breaks (depending where I was working at the time) but I took the same approach to my workouts during that hour. So here’s a few of my tips to get in that early morning workout:
What are your tips to get out the door for an early morning workout?
Am I missing anything on my list?

i preset my coffee for that very reason! get up and go!
That’s one of my favorite things to do. I have a roommate so that doesn’t work as well these days especially since I don’t like her coffee but if I know i’ll be up before her, I’ll totally prep my coffee!
I’m the same way about coming up with excuses as the day goes on. I just have to give myself some tough love when that alarm goes off. Things I can’t repeat here because there are too many expletives. It’s harsh but it works for me like 70% of the time.
I set the alarm and force myself out of bed and get to the gym before my brain even knows what’s going on. And then once my brain does figure it out, I am DONE! 😀 Works like a charm!
Genius! 😉
A few months ago I was playing hockey at 6am before work. It was critical that I had everything packed and ready (#2). I would go straight from the rink to work so in addition to workout gear I had to have work stuff (lunch, work clothes…) and shower stuff (razor, shampoo, toothbrush…) ready the night before. Forgot some stuff some of the mornings, that gets embarrassing depending on the item.
Oh man, I’ve definitely been there! You never want that day when you get out of the shower only to remember there’s no clean underwear… 😉
Love morning workouts! I always feel better the rest of the day. #6 is so key though– I used to get anxious and upset if I missed a workout but now I realized not to be so rigid and realize plans change xo
Exactly! We can plan, plan, plan but if we don’t leave ourselves even a LITTLE bit of flexibility, we’re not setting ourselves up for success. Coming from one of the biggest Type As out there, that has been a HUGE lesson! 😉
great tips, and NICE GRAPHICS. 🙂
I’m a fan of actually WEARING clothes to bed (if you can get away with it), and putting your shoes right next to your bed.
Also, enlisting a buddy (i.e. my dog) to poke and prod at me when my alarm goes off is quite helpful.
Thanks, girl! You know, I’m pretty good with graphics in Pages. 😉
great tips!!
Thanks! 🙂
