A Healthy Update

I’ve been hinting for the last week or so that I’ve been making some changes and needing to update you all again on my health stuff. That time has finally come. 😉

As you know, I started the candida cleanse and elimination diet a couple months ago. I was taking specific supplements, continuing yoga and whatever workouts felt good, and I was trying to give my body as much rest as possible.

Many people have told me they don’t have enough self control to do what I was doing, but it wasn’t about self control, this was about my health. I pride myself on listening to my body and being self aware enough to know what’s working and what’s not and when I’m due for a change.

Well, I made it 5 weeks when I realized I needed another change.

As someone who eats relatively clean 80% of the time, I didn’t anticipate the diet being too challenging and quite honestly, it wasn’t. The hardest thing for me was taking out nuts, smoothies, and dried fruit. I missed my favorite breakfast smoothies, having some trail mix or a bar for an afternoon snack at work, and knowing that any of the above help fulfill any cravings.

I cheated once in the middle of the plan. It was my birthday and my friend who was successful on this plan before told me it’s okay to cheat one day and just add another day of “Phase 1” onto the end. I decided to eat as I would the rest of the day, but have a little coconut milk ice cream to celebrate the big 2-9. The next day I felt terrible. Sore, lethargic, headache. I could tell my entire body was inflamed.

I stayed consistent on my plan for another couple weeks, but found myself feeling like it was time to change again. I felt ready to reintroduce nuts, smoothies and dried fruit. I felt like I had cleaned my system of the sugar that had been controlling me, causing the extreme inflammation inside my body, and like it was time to make a decision to forgo the remaining weeks of this plan.

At the same time I was coming to this decision, my social media channels and emails were filling up with info on the new Tone It Up 2016 Bikini Series. I was feeling pulled in that direction. To get back to my “normal” clean eating, to have lower impact workouts scheduled out for me and to just keep listening to my body.

I signed up and we kicked off nearly 2 full weeks ago.

You guys, I have to tell you. I’m feeling amazing! AMAZING!

I think I needed that first phase of the candida plan to reset myself and start again but now that I’m feeling better, the workouts and other nutritional advice from the Tone It Up plan is bringing me back to myself. It sounds so cheesy, but I’m so happy with my decision.

I’m back to eating nuts and nut butters, but I’m being more mindful of how much and how my body feels after. I know how easy it is for me to overdo it on those things but this slow reintroduction and moderation is working perfectly.

There are a lot of other aspects to my health that I haven’t gone into as much detail on (hello, wacky hormones) but I’m working on that as well with a specific supplement plan. I can share more on that if anyone’s interested.

If there’s anything you can take away from today, let it be a reminder that if something’s not working for you or your body, it’s alright to make a change (or several).

Thanks for sharing, Katie! I’ve been noticing that I’m not feeling my best lately and have been considering trying a similar elimination “diet” (<–hate that word), and it's encouraging to see that you had good results with it!

I eat clean about 80% of the time as well (I tend to splurge a bit on weekends). I also find that yoga and regular runs do amazing things for me physically, emotionally, and mentally. I don’t know how I’d do on a cleanse, as I tend to be a rebel when I hear the word no. And as a former anorexic, I have to run from restrictive diets so I don’t fall into any bad patterns. Kudos to you for sticking to it and doing what you felt was beneficial to your body! That’s what it’s all about 🙂

I don’t think I could live without my nut butters. Almond butter is my go to food and I think I’d go through some serious withdrawal without it. Glad you’ve found what is working for your body!

It’s really interesting when you start really, truly figuring out what works for your body and what doesn’t. I learned that last year when we went paleo and I haven’t looked back since. We’re about 80% clean most of the time, with some cheating on the weekends but my body feels better when I eat clean. My body can no longer tolerate (or maybe I won’t subject myself to it anymore) grains. It’s one thing to eat sugar but grains.. OMG my body hates me.

I’m happy for you that you’re feeling this amazing! Run with it, girl!

I hope you have a wicked weekend my friend!

That’s awesome that you found a program that’s working for you! I’ve been thinking about doing the Whole30, but I just don’t know if I can do it. I really need to cleanse the sugars out of my diet too. I might check out your Tone it up program. 🙂
