One of the hardest things for me, despite understanding it’s importance, is staying on top of my stretching and flexibility training. I’ll tell myself that I’m going to stretch after my workout but then I’m either running late, forget, feel “too tired” or some other excuse and it doesn’t happen. I also tell myself I’ll foam roll or stretch while watching TV or before bed…doesn’t happen. I’m working on fixing that and getting myself into a habit; once I do that, I know I’ll be good.
So what did I do Thursday morning after breakfast and before my shower? I foam rolled while I was watching The Today Show. It was awesome!
My training this week has been weird again with the snow. I played it safe (and smart!) and used Tuesday’s shoveling as my strength/cross-training session. I not only shoveled our driveway and sidewalks, but helped at my grandparents as well. I got at least an hour of exercise in and you know I was feeling it the next day!
Otherwise my training has been going well this week. There hasn’t been much strength training but I’m hoping to pick that back up today and into next week. There wasn’t much on the agenda so I don’t feel like I fell behind schedule.
I’m feeling nervous but also excited for tomorrow’s long run. I know 8 miles won’t be easy but I’m working on that whole mind over matter thing. And I know I’ll feel great once I finish.

I was AWFUL about stretching, making many of the same excuses as you did (still do?). Thank goodness I finally started going to yoga after swearing over a year ago I was going to start! I’m loving my twice-a-week sessions, for both stretching, toning, and flexibility.
I really need to try foam rolling, by the way…
I’m terrible at remembering to stretch and foam roll. I always say I will do it “later” but later never comes!
Stretching / flexibility is the hardest thing for me too. I have been actually making myself do forward folds when I hit the bathroom at work (sounds gross, but I need those stretches SO bad). I’ve been doing my strength training and stretching before (with stretching after to) any cardio. Getting there, but it’s more remembering that i need to keep at it and not quit when i hit a goal.
Exactly! You do what you gotta do but you gotta keep stretching. I should go do it now…my hamstrings are tight.
I’m right there with you as far as struggling to stretch and foam roll. I always say I’ll do it later but often forget. My hubby and I have both been trying to do a little foam rolling before bed each night. It does wonders!
That’s such a great idea! I really need to do it right before bed. I used to make 20 mins of yoga a habit before bed to unwind but got out of the habit and am having a hard time getting back into it.
Making time to foam roll is the best decision I make before finishing a workout. For me, it makes a huge difference in feeling areas that are tight and loosening everything up. Love my roller!
It absolutely makes a huge difference! I just have to commit myself to it and hold myself accountable.
