One of my goals for 2018 is about me getting back to my health being a priority. It sounds really dramatic or like I totally “fell off the wagon” and I can’t say I did. What I can say is that I’ve been eating more packaged, processed and convenient foods than I normally do. And I have felt the effects. It was a necessity for a bit when life got extra hectic and while I still tried to make better choices, it has felt really good to go back to prioritizing the foods (and supplements) that make my body feel best.
With that said, one of my very favorite supplements that I use daily is collagen!
Benefits of Collagen
I’m sure you’ve noticed that collagen has been making it’s way around the wellness space for a little while now, growing in popularity every single day. But I’m sure you’re left wondering why?
Collagen is great for your hair, skin, and nail health, maintains healthy joints, improves concentration and an overall sense of well-being, and more. This super supplement is an absolute must in my diet and here’s how I’ve been using it every single day.
How I use collagen
While collagen does contain protein, I usually still include a scoop of my favorite plant based protein powder in the mix too. Below is my current go-to smoothie recipe. It’s great whether sipping with a straw or out of a bowl with a spoon and some tasty toppings.
1-2 TBSP Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate
1 scoop Plant Based Protein Powder
1 scoop greens powder
1 cup unsweetened coconut or almond milk don’t be afraid to add a little more, if needed, to get things moving
1/4 cup frozen cauliflower rice
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
¼-1/2 frozen banana
½-1 TBSP almond butter
Blend everything together and enjoy! Sometimes I’ll pour it into a bowl and top with granola, coconut flakes, or cacao nibs. Other times, I just sip it with a straw.
I have been drinking my coffee black for the last 5 years, at least. Aside from the occasional cafe au lait, if the coffee is good, I don’t usually feel like it needs anything else. Buuuuuuut this creamy fat fueled coffee with collagen is too good to pass up. I haven’t been doing it every single day and I’ve been skipping the extra MCT oil lately, but love it just the same.
I will say that I don’t necessarily do both every day, but I do make sure I’m doing one other the other, or finding some other way to make sure I’m getting my daily dose of collagen. I have seen so many creative recipes out there using collagen, though I haven’t branched outside of my tried-and-true favorites just yet.
On the go
I love that Great Lakes Gelatin has to-go packs too, perfect for traveling or carrying in your purse or gym bag. The boy and I are getting ready for a fun trip and you know I’ll be stashing a few of these in my suitcase!
Great Lakes Gelatin also sent me their Collagen Endurance to try. I haven’t been using it consistently enough just yet but since I’m on my second week of half marathon training, I’ll definitely be putting this to the test in the coming weeks!
