Taking Our Health Care Into Consideration

When you choose to leave your full-time job and pursue a crazy idea, to travel the country for an entire year while raising money for charity, I’m sure you can imagine there’s a lot of things that go into making a decision like that. There’s a lot of research and planning and heart-to-heart conversations with yourself, as well as your traveling partner…

The thing is, Sam and I know this won’t be easy but we understand the risks and at the end of the day, the potential to change the world and have a huge impact on our greater community is what stands ahead of us, is what continues to call us and push us through the tough decisions and ultimately what makes the financial and physical strains worth it.

But at the same time, we can’t be dumb with our money. We can’t spend every last penny hoping that it will be the best investment of our lives. We have to think about also saving for the unknown, with our health and with our lives.

I know it’s not the most exciting thing to talk about but we have to get real…we have to talk about it…we have to be smart. Besides the more we talk about it and talk it out, the easier it should be to understand, the easier it should be to plan, and the better position we should ultimately find ourselves to avoid financial disaster if our health took an unexpected turn.

I’m a millennial…and as a group, we’re being reminded everyday that we’re adults and needing to make more and more “adult” decisions – our health care included. Whether you’re getting married, having babies and starting a family, or taking huge risks with your life and career, we need to be sure we’re thinking through our health care options, we’re making the right choices for our personal situation, and that we’re avoiding the consequences of making the wrong decision.

For me, that means taking the time to sit down, research my options and really think it through. This isn’t some decision that can be made in 20 minutes, it takes time, but it’s time well spent. I can’t say what decision is best for you, all I can do is take the time needed to do my research, ask for help when needed, and then make the best decision for me and my financial future.
