I’m adjusting…err, well, trying to adjust. There’s a lot of things brewing and bubbling and I think my head is just completely spinning. I’m finding I’m having a hard time figuring out what I want and what is best for me right now. Like I said a lot of brewing going on and unfortunately it hasn’t included one of these…
Don’t worry, I’ll get on that soon! 😉
Anyway, there will be more on that later after I have time to process, research and get my feet grounded again. For now, it’s Wednesday and that means we’re due for a fun What I Ate Wednesday: moving edition!
Breakfast:
Hotel breakfasts are challenging for me. The “hot” breakfast is the new craze which often includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, pastries and sugared cereal.
If I’m lucky, I’ll find an oatmeal bar, peanut butter and a banana and I’d never know I was eating anywhere else. (I wasn’t so lucky with peanut butter at our first hotel but the second and third pulled through!)
Lunch:
My mom went to Illinois State University and there’s this restaurant she used to eat at all the time in college called Avanti’s. She took my dad many years ago and as a kid, we used to stop any time we drove through the area. Of course as my dad and I were traveling through we had to stop for an early dinner and get some sandwiches to go. (It’s ALL about the bread!) I had the second half of my veggie sandwich with a side of fruit for lunch the next day.
Dinner:
And after you get back from driving 36 hours, you must be crazy if you think anyone wants to make dinner…even the next day. So my parents took us out for mexican food at our favorite local place – Pablo’s.
I went for the fish tacos
And of course a margarita!
Dessert:
Another one of our “must stops” while traveling through is in St. Louis. My dad grew up here and one of their favorite spots as a kid was Ted Drewes frozen custard. Maybe it’s nostalgia or maybe it’s just that good. I went for a kiddie Reese’s sundae (I was trying to make sure I was less sick from the custard…I’m not sure how well that worked) but it was delicious!
Do you have any “must-stops” when you’re traveling?
Any particularly good eats this week?

I always look for a Chipotle when I travel!! I eat a ton when I travel b/c I get bored! lol… I can’t wait to come visit you in Chicago!! I love the eats there!
Pleeeeease visit!! 🙂
Oh no! The return of pumpkin beers – my favorite!
I’m just getting into it and trying to work with Sam Adams to get it to my local bars STAT! 😉
A must stop for me when traveling is fro yo! Always want to get fro yo somewhere when I travel!
I hope your week is good so far! <3
Mmmm love froyo!!
Looks like you made the best out of things and really good choices! That sandwich looks great, well worth the stop!
SO worth it!
I feel like my eating is all over the place when I travel. Even if it’s awesome food it tends to be too much. I do loooove good bread though. It really is all about good bread.
It’s so hard to eat while traveling. I’m a small meals plus snacks girl but when I travel that usually goes out the window and a normal sized meal makes me too full. Needless to say, I get ya! 😉
I tend to eat SO MUCH when I travel- I guess because I’m bored?
And oh man, do I love fish tacos. It doesn’t get much better than that.
I’m actually not a huge fan of this year’s batch of Sam’s Pumpkin Ale. I’ve tried two so far, and haven’t had more than a few sips of each, because there’s a weird aftertaste this year. Maybe it was just the particular 6-pack we bought? I certainly am willing to keep trying (especially if I can find it on tap in Boston next month!).
I definitely found myself reaching for snacks out of boredom while driving. I tried to keep it under control as best I could!
The beef has a ton of “must stops” in Chicago. Unfortunately for him (not for me), he’s on a clean eating only experiment and I’m guessing that Lou Malnati’s and Tony’s Italian Beefs are out of the question. 🙂
Every time I’m in Chicago I cry inside for deep dish pizza – its soooo good and I can’t eat it! 🙁
Ohh your dessert sounds delicious. Can’t ever go wrong w/ custard & reeses.
My stomach ache after may differ (dang lactose intolerance) but my taste buds definitely agree! 🙂
as a former bloomington-normalian, i LOVE avanti’s bread. and as a former crystal lakian, i LOVE pablo’s. you are making me super jealous. stop it. also, on my trip out west i ate a lot of jimmy john’s. the veggie sandwich is pretty delish. it’s all about the guac. my two cents 🙂
Well when you come visit CL, we can get Pablo’s & margaritas – deal?
